John grew up in Cary, North Carolina and has always wanted to ensure the quality of life he enjoyed as a child be established and maintained throughout the Triangle Region. He received his AA degree from Louisburg College in 1983 and received his BSBA from East Carolina University in 1985 with a concentration in Marketing.
For almost 28 years John has been involved in the leasing, sale, and development of commercial real estate projects locally that have a combined value of more than $850,000,000. He has consistently been recognized as a proven leader by his colleagues and peers and is known for his uncompromising ethics and detailed market knowledge. In 1990 John obtained his NC Brokers license while serving as Project Manager for the Kitty Hawk Business Park and in 1992 founded Powell Properties, Inc. In 2010, Powell Properties aligned with KW Commercial Cary, and by year-end John was named to its National Commercial Leadership Council and was recognized as one of the Top 10 Producing Individual Agents in the Nation. For the last 4 1/2 years John has been crafting strategic solutions for his Clients as a member of TradeMark Properties and led the Sales Team for more than 3 years.
John specializes in buyer, seller, tenant and landlord representation, 1031 exchange strategies, land assemblage, and build-to-suit need-based development. He understands leasing, owning and developing commercial real estate is a very complicated endeavor and believes everyone deserves competent representation to make sure an informed business decision is made. John has tremendous knowledge in Industrial and Flex based product and has overseen the marketing and development of the Kitty Hawk Business Park a 125-acre Corporate Business Park located in Cary, NC near the Raleigh Durham International Airport and Pinnacle Park a 165 acre Industrial Park off US1 South in Apex.
John has been recognized with numerous awards including Realtor of the Year by TCAR, Power Broker for both Leasing and Sales by CoStar, and his former company Powell Properties received the prestigious Community Service Award from the Cary Chamber of Commerce. Giving back to the community has always been a passion for John and a few examples of his past service include being Vice Chair for the Cary Chambers of Commerce Economic Development Committee, serving as Chair for both the Cary and Holly Springs Chambers of Commerce, serving as President of the Cary Page Rotary Club, and serving on numerous Board of Directors including the Kraft YMCA and Life Experiences. In addition, John is active in his Church and has taught Sunday Scool with his wife for more than 12 years. John and his wife Kim have been married for almost 25 years and have 4 amazing children with 2 in college and 2 still at home.
As a North Carolina native, Thomas was instrumental in the development of Highwoods Properties position as the Triangle's leader in office space. He was involved in taking Highwoods public in 1994 and formed Highwoods Forsyth Brokerage in 1995 to handle the company's third-party services. Rex acquired the company in late 1996, changing the name to Thomas Commercial Inc. Following two successful mergers, the company became known as Grubb & Ellis|Thomas Linderman Graham and became one of the largest and most successful full service commercial real estate firms in the Triangle market. In October 2012, the company was sold to Avison Young, the fastest growing commercial real estate services firm in North America. In March 2015, Rex left Avison Young and created JRT Holdings to focus on tenant, investment sales and acquisitions, and real estate consulting. He has been involved in several thousand lease and sales transactions over his 37 year career.
Rex serves on the Campbell University Board of Advisors; Board of Directors, Endowment Committee and Finance Committee of the Occoneechee Council, Boy Scouts of America; N.C. Methodist Conference Real Estate Committee; and is Chairman of the Research Triangle Park Service Center Board where he has served for over 11 years. Rex was a founding director of Capital Bank serving on the corporate board from 1997 until 2009. He also chaired the committee that oversees local real estate market survey published quarterly by the Triangle Business Journal for over 20 years.
Teddy Hobbs / Vice President
Teddy joined Phoenix Commercial Properties, LLC. in 2014 as an Associate and was named Vice President in 2016. He specializes in tenant and buyer representation within the Triangle region and most metropolitan areas within North Carolina. Teddy is able to assist clients in all sectors of commercial real estate including office, industrial and retail with a strong concentration in building sales.
Teddy is a graduate of NC State University with a degree in International Politics and attended Virginia Military Institute. During his tenure at NC State he completed an internship with the Urban Planning Department of Istanbul, Turkey where he assisted in the development and implementation of infrastructure projects and municipal transportation systems.
Michael Wilen / Senior Advisor
Michael joined Phoenix Commercial Properties, LLC. in 2014 and specializes in buyer and seller representation specific to land, site selection and building projects. In addition to land transactions, he is also heavily involved in retail leasing, assisting Landlords as well as tenants.
Michael is also a Development Services Coordinator with The Phoenix, a build-to-suit advisory services firm that offers clients al-a-carte planning, strategy and construction guidance for new development and re-development projects.
Michael is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in Psychology and minors in Business, the Environment, and Scandinavian Studies. He also holds an additional salesman's license in Michigan.
Thomas Goodwin / Advisor
Thomas joined Phoenix Commercial Properties, LLC. in 2016 and specializes in tenant and buyer representation specific to office and flex properties. He serves the greater central North Carolina Regional markets.
Thomas is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in Sport Management and Business Administration.
Kim specializes in tenant and buyer representation and has acquired more than 25 years of talent management experience with a strong background in workforce planning, employment branding, and business operations. Her unique combination of skills and human resource expertise enable Kim to develop and execute workplace strategies that enhance the business performance and bottom line of her clients.
